Should You Make Your Website in Flash?

flash is like the blond girl you pull in a club. looks nice, but lacking where it counts.

CMS's are like the good looking secretary whose willing to do everything for you.

From a designers point of view, flash is a beauty. Designers get more grey hairs trying to make XHTML and CSS work in all browsers. Flash is the universal platform. You design the layout knowing it'll display same on all flash players. It's a rare metal that needs an artisan to craft it. Sadly, few sites are built with restraint and skill. Flash is the future. Search engines can and will trawl flash text....

There's also the point that to blind people with screenreaders, Flash-only websites are utterly useless. If you can't read a site in a text only browser like lynx, then a blind person will generally be unable to "see" a website, either.

Flash is great and html but if u just want the more advance look of things i think that u should clearly go with flash and if u don't want it in flash learn php it will still look like a great site 2 me depending on who is making it

Well said 'automagically' - Flash sites are often for the equivelent of a glossy brochure - something that people will go to specifically to check out a company / individual portfolio of work - and flash is a great tool for showing this type of stuff. Its stupid to refer to the BBC site, as most flash sites that do their job well are a completely different kettle of fish to a site like the BBC. Theres too much snobbery among many web people... just let it flow, and let go. Alternatively just have a wank.

Good article. I love Flash but don't consider this bashing, it has fair points. I do think, however, sometimes you want 100% Flash because that's the point. I see nothing wrong with a personal portfolio, such as Neave, 2advanced, snarg, ray of light, ... showing off a little eye candy. It's a different ball park than the BBC or some other information heave site; a different audience too. Sometimes Flashy is the point, it'd be great if the writer mentioned that.
